No icon then you are not in area receiving traffic info. Green icon low severity,yellow medium severity and red high severity traffic. You have to have the receiver plugged into the cars lighter switch to receive data and to check your traffic settings. Same thing happened to me with my Nuvi when I updated from sw version 5.
I'm trying to contact Garmin - we'll see. This shouldn't surprise me, but that's correct. The traffic option only shows up when the unit is plugged in to external power. Does not show up when running on internal battery -.
I also don't know if that firmware update will give me any added benefit or if it will ad traffic ads to the screen which I do not want. It should just update the way the traffic is received. And how it comes to the device. It should give you the change history when you put a check in the box. You have to use webupdater. Connect your receiver to your computer and run webupdater.
